Installing a Helical Head on a Jointer | How To DIY Woodworking

Jointer Upgrade from Straight Knives to a Helical Head

Jointer Upgrade = Do you want to up your woodworking game? Then try this quick tool upgrade today.

Today I’m going to be doing a jointer upgrade from straight knives to a helical cutterhead.

I have a Grizzly G0814 6″ Jointer that came with straight knives and I’m upgrading to a Titan Knife Lux Cut 3 head from MyWoodCutters.com.

The Lux Cut 3 head is very similar to the popular Shelix cutterhead, but the manufacturing states that they use a more precise machining process, and they also add a superior rust resistant finish. You don’t want this investment rusting out on you.

Upgrading to a helical head has a number of benefits:

  • Improved quality of cut
  • Better dust collection performance
  • Reduction in operating noise
  • All of the carbide inserts came pre-indexed so there is no lengthy set-up or maintenance process

If you get a nick in a straight knife you’ll need to get it sharpened or replaced, but with the helical head, you just need to rotate the insert 90 degrees and you’re back in business.

Now let’s start by getting a baseline noise level so we can compare it to the noise level after the helical head is installed. Let’s get to it.

Final Thoughts

Now that’s how you up your game! This upgrade went a lot quicker than I thought it would and I couldn’t be happier with the results. Thisis by no means an upgrade that you have to do in order to properly mill lumber, but it does make the process a little more enjoyable by making it easier and quieter.
