How to Assemble Pipe Clamps

Two Bit Woodworks - Pipe Clamp Assembly

Hey everybody, today I am going to be putting together pipe clamps.

I have been building up my clamp collection lately and thought that I would record a quick assembly video to show you the steps. You can never have enough clamps. Check out the steps below. There is also an accompanying assembly video that you may refer to.

Get Organized

The first step is to lay out everything that you are going to need:

  • A scraper
  • Paste wax
  • Mineral spirits
  • Latex gloves
  • Clean shop rags
  • ¾-inch pipe clamps
  • ¾-inch steel pipe.

Remove the Labels

I start by removing the bulk of the labels using a small scraper.

Cleaning the Steel Pipe

Once you have all of the labels and tape removed, take a clean cloth and wipe down the pipe with some mineral spirits. Make sure to pay special attention to the areas with any leftover adhesive. Go over the pipe with a clean rag one last time to make sure it is dry and there is no leftover black residue coming off the pipe.

Apply Paste Wax

To keep any glue from sticking to the pipe during glue ups, I like to use a few good coats of paste wax. So, I will take another clean cloth and apply a few coats of paste wax to the pipe and then wipe them clean.

Assembling the Clamps

After applying the paste wax I thread the top piece of the pipe clamp to one side of the black pipe and then slide the bottom piece up from the opposite side of the pipe.

Making Them Last

The only limitation to these clamps is the length of the pipe that you use. If you take care of your clamps, they will take care of you. Keep them clean and waxed and they will last for years and years.
